BACKGROUND

Ileana S. Rivera is a popsurreal watercolor artist from Pennsylvania, USA.

She has explored watercolor technique for more than a decade and has since employed its transparency and loose movement.

When it comes to illustration, she incorporates linear quality and clarity learned from pencil drawing.

Rivera graduated from Susquehanna University with a Bachelor of Arts: Studio Arts, with an emphasis on drawing and painting.

Taking after Contemporary American Folk Art, Rivera's paintings feature characters and symbols that portray surreal narratives, satire, and dreamscapes.

Although the characters are mostly influenced by vintage children’s book illustration, they also feature exaggerated and macabre traits.

ART STYLE

INSPIRATIONS

Additionally, Japanese wood block prints, Ukiyo-e, inspire overall composition and a flat perspective. This adds to the unrealistic and dreamy atmosphere of the paintings.

The flat perspective is also achieved by incorporating visual patterns, such as a repeated motif. Mixing these patterns alongside the characters creates dis-fragmented scenery.

Modern styles, such as Superflat and Popsurrealism, inspire color choices and character depictions in Rivera’s watercolors.
